Simon Jones knew something was up the moment he picked up the phone and heard Richard Ashcroft on the other end of the line. The two didn’t talk on a regular basis particularly since their band The Verve went through a rather ugly split in the late 90s. Is there a guy in music with more a pretentious sneer than Richard Ashcroft? Was it worth waiting 11 years for a sequel to ‘Urban Hymns’? The album was bang on the Zeitgeist. Then The Verve went away and singer Richard Ashcroft embarked on a solo career. The band got back together last year and ‘Forth’ is their stab at a comeback. It’s pretty far off the Zeitgeist as far as I can see, but it’s choc full of mellow tunes. The Verve´s comeback single Love is Noise is at number 5 this week on the UK charts. The track is nothing special, The Verve sound the same as 10 years ago and Richard Ashcroft wears the same clothes as 10 years ago. Watch the video to Love is Noise below, it looks like The Verve has had a decent budget for Love is Noise video. The Verve frontman Richard Ashcroft thinks the band should be regarded in the same was as the US hip-hop collective The Wu-Tang Clan. The Verve’s frontman Richard Ashcroft has confirmed that there are still inter-band tensions running within the group - despite them reuniting for a new album and various live shows and festival appearances this year.
